I'm thoroughly enjoying all of The High Republic books。 Although this was Middlegrade, it did not disappoint。 Vernestra is such a cool new Jedi Master, I love how she took on the situations and adapted to things, despite the challenges she might face with her age。 I didn't dislike anything about this story and I also loved the tie in with other characters I've seen throughout this series come into this book。 The ending was also very good and I'm excited to see where everything goes!4/5 I'm thoroughly enjoying all of The High Republic books。 Although this was Middlegrade, it did not disappoint。 Vernestra is such a cool new Jedi Master, I love how she took on the situations and adapted to things, despite the challenges she might face with her age。 I didn't dislike anything about this story and I also loved the tie in with other characters I've seen throughout this series come into this book。 The ending was also very good and I'm excited to see where everything goes!4/5 。。。more

If the first novel in the new “High Republic” initiative, “Light of the Jedi,” was a rousing tee-off to the new era of “Star Wars,” one that managed to work as both a singular story unto itself and as an exciting tie-in to the broader pre-prequel-film universe being established, then the second novel, Justina Ireland’s “A Test of Courage,” is…well, not that。 It’s not that “A Test of Courage” is BAD or poorly written, so much as it’s just distinctly unmemorable – few of the characters stand out a If the first novel in the new “High Republic” initiative, “Light of the Jedi,” was a rousing tee-off to the new era of “Star Wars,” one that managed to work as both a singular story unto itself and as an exciting tie-in to the broader pre-prequel-film universe being established, then the second novel, Justina Ireland’s “A Test of Courage,” is…well, not that。 It’s not that “A Test of Courage” is BAD or poorly written, so much as it’s just distinctly unmemorable – few of the characters stand out as more than just stock “types,” and the story itself – which involves a ship full of teens crash-landing on an alien planet and having to fend for themselves– feels rote and VERY familiar for anyone who’s ever read even one survival-centric story before。 For those itching to get the full “High Republic” experience, “A Test of Courage” isn’t necessarily a painful read…but it’s hard to imagine anyone coming away from it feeling particularly enthused, either。 。。。more

This is a youth book in the High Republic era。 It follows a newly knighted young Jedi and a Padawan and how they react to the "Great Disaster"。 I enjoyed this book。 It can be read alone or as part of the High Republic series。 This is a youth book in the High Republic era。 It follows a newly knighted young Jedi and a Padawan and how they react to the "Great Disaster"。 I enjoyed this book。 It can be read alone or as part of the High Republic series。 。。。more

This is a great book for younger readers。 However, I am an adult and I loved it too。 It was so great to see a group of young people handling a bad situation。 And the young jedi knight, Vern! She was amazing。 It was so apparent how she became a knight at such a young age, so mature and knowledgeable。

This is part of The High Republic series but can be read as a stand alone。 It is aimed at the middle school children crowd。 In this one, several Jedi are on a ship with delegates from several planets as they are opening a new hyperspace lane。 This ship is destroyed and a group of young children are the only survivors。 In this group is a new Jedi Knight with a padawan and two children of delegates。I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novella。 I wasn't expecting much and it easily exceeded m This is part of The High Republic series but can be read as a stand alone。 It is aimed at the middle school children crowd。 In this one, several Jedi are on a ship with delegates from several planets as they are opening a new hyperspace lane。 This ship is destroyed and a group of young children are the only survivors。 In this group is a new Jedi Knight with a padawan and two children of delegates。I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novella。 I wasn't expecting much and it easily exceeded my expectations。 The biggest surprise for me was the depth this book contained。 It dealt with death of loved ones, survival, and grief and how to handle loss。 It didn't go deep into these issues but the exploration was more than enough for these issues。 I enjoyed the characters too。 The new Jedi Knight or the padawan that has doubts was a nice addition to the lore。 And a Star Wars novel would not be complete with a sarcastic droid which I enjoyed。 This is a self contained adventure that does hint that it could be connected to a larger story line。 This was a fun read that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages。 Children will connect with the characters as they realize they can be heroes too while adults connect with the story and the overall themes that are present in this book。 I enjoyed these characters and I hope that we get to see them once again in this universe。 。。。more

Star Wars continues to dive into the era of the High Republic with Justina Ireland’s A Test of Courage。 It is a young reader’s novel set concurrently with the events of Light of the Jedi and it sure lives up to the previous novel。 Prior knowledge of Light of the Jedi is not required to fully engage with this book。 It tells a standalone story and introduces its own characters and is set within the same timeframe。 Reading Light of the Jedi first will only enhance your enjoyment of this book, but y Star Wars continues to dive into the era of the High Republic with Justina Ireland’s A Test of Courage。 It is a young reader’s novel set concurrently with the events of Light of the Jedi and it sure lives up to the previous novel。 Prior knowledge of Light of the Jedi is not required to fully engage with this book。 It tells a standalone story and introduces its own characters and is set within the same timeframe。 Reading Light of the Jedi first will only enhance your enjoyment of this book, but you will not be lost if you do not。 There is a fear with young reader novels that they can lean too heavily into childish rhythms but that is not the case with this novel。 In fact, the only indicator that this book was written for children is that the protagonists are all young。 Other than that, this is a story for all ages。 Justina Ireland creates a wonderful cast of new characters led by newly knighted Jedi Vernestra Rwoh。 She is a 16-year-old wonderkid trying to come to terms with her new status as she leads a group of youngsters through a spaceship disaster。 Jedi Padawan Imri Cantaros and Honesty Weft, an ambassador’s son, deal with loss, grief and the anger that comes from it whilst 12-year-old genius Avon Starros and her droid companion J-6 prove that age is no indicator of intelligence。 There is an emotional resonance throughout the book that amplifies as the reader gets to know the characters, and their connection to each other is the core focus of the novel。 It is a good choice from Justina Ireland as it is that connection that ties the reader into the journeys of this motley group。 The action, though sparse, is expertly written and it paints a vivid picture of crashing spaceships, blaster fights and lightsaber action。 Indeed, the latter provides a unique perspective on one of the most favoured parts of Star Wars。Like Light of the Jedi before it, A Test of Courage also tackles how the Jedi of this era feel and use the force。 Imri’s connection to the force gives him heightened awareness of empathy whereas Vernestra feels a surety of thought, at least at the beginning of the book。 The narrative skips along at a vibrant pace and if one is so inclined this book could easily be read in a day。 It is fun, exciting and has engaging characters to root for which makes it an ideal entry point into this new era of Star Wars storytelling。 The only setback I can see is in the two antagonists and their connection to the Nihil。 The Nihil themselves are not explained well in this novel and without the understanding of their organisation from Light of the Jedi their motivations and actions could be seen as underdeveloped at worst, mysterious at best。 The end of the novel also sets the stage for the next story in this saga, and I cannot wait to dive back in。 It is another hit for Lucasfilm Publishing, with this book the High Republic continues its impressive start。 。。。more

A great book for junior readers and star wars fans looking to explore more of the high republic era。The second half turned the book into an interesting story, a quick read for older readers but not at the expense of a quality star wars story。 Works well as a tie in material to Light of the Jedi taking place during the same time frame。 3。5 starsReviewhttps://starwarsescapepod。podbean。com。。。 A great book for junior readers and star wars fans looking to explore more of the high republic era。The second half turned the book into an interesting story, a quick read for older readers but not at the expense of a quality star wars story。 Works well as a tie in material to Light of the Jedi taking place during the same time frame。 3。5 starsReviewhttps://starwarsescapepod。podbean。com。。。 。。。more

I didn’t like this as much as Light of the Jedi。。and I’m not quite sure why。 I actually got kind of bored/tired reading it at one point, and then had to come back to it。 The second half was definitely more enjoyable, and I really enjoyed the interactions between Imri and Vernestra! I’m curious to see what trouble Avon gets into with her “souvenir”

Not for a conventional fan。。 had to drop after the start of chapter 3。。。 I couldn't handle the obvious repetition of cliche lines。 Could have been better。 maybe it's only me but I don't like this。 This is constructive criticism just a personal experience。 Not for a conventional fan。。 had to drop after the start of chapter 3。。。 I couldn't handle the obvious repetition of cliche lines。 Could have been better。 maybe it's only me but I don't like this。 This is constructive criticism just a personal experience。 。。。more

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy for review。 This was a welcome surprise。 A Test of Courage was an excellent addition to Star Wars canon。 I loved all the POV characters and thought each of them had a unique personality and voice, which is such a great feat in middle grade novels。 I loved Vernestra as a character and hope we get to see more of her journey as a Jedi in future High Republic novels。 Would highly recommend to any Star Wars fan。

It was slow to begin with too many characters introduced quickly but it picks up by the end。

I appreciate the nod against the death penalty in this book when some main characters were contemplating revenge。 It was one of a few noteworthy elements that I’m glad I read to my kids。

This book feels very comfy。 I really loved the character of Vernestra Rwoh, her arc throughout this book of realising what it means to be a jedi Knight and her being so mature is a really pleasant thing to see。 I really enjoyed the light of the jedi connections and also was really happy with the star wars legends references too。 Love this one, would highly recommend。

Read the book for yourself。 The end was great way to tie into Starlight Beacon。

This book was so so (。。。) so great。 I first thought it will be a funny adventure with kids but it was so much more than that。What I first thought as a quick and easy read turns out to be an amazing middle-grade book in the Star Wars Universe。 There isn’t much action but rather an interesting insight in the Jedi lore and the universe of the High Republic。 It’s also pretty rare to have a Padawan and a young Knight interaction without the influence of an elder Jedi。 It was very refreshing and innov This book was so so (。。。) so great。 I first thought it will be a funny adventure with kids but it was so much more than that。What I first thought as a quick and easy read turns out to be an amazing middle-grade book in the Star Wars Universe。 There isn’t much action but rather an interesting insight in the Jedi lore and the universe of the High Republic。 It’s also pretty rare to have a Padawan and a young Knight interaction without the influence of an elder Jedi。 It was very refreshing and innovative! I also like the "together to fight adversity" trope: four youngsters with no common interests have to team up in order to survive。 And gosh I love this SO MUCH。 Vernesta, Avon, Imri and Honesty are very different but so likable in their own ways。 And that J-6 droid which is half a nanny half a bodyguard is hilarious。 I can’t wait to see what’s next for those characters and to have the second book in my hands because it’s also a huge plus: this little book is absolutely gorgeous, the illustrations are beautiful and the editorial work is cute and unusual。 A win! rep: black mctw: death, explosion, kidnapping。 。。。more

This book was much more than I was expecting。 action packed and not at all surface level as I'd expected for a "kid's" book。 It was filled with character development and some interesting takes on grief。 Thoroughly enjoyed this entry into the high republic era。 This book was much more than I was expecting。 action packed and not at all surface level as I'd expected for a "kid's" book。 It was filled with character development and some interesting takes on grief。 Thoroughly enjoyed this entry into the high republic era。 。。。more

If I could, I'd have given this book 3。5 stars rather than 4, but 3 seemed a bit harsh。 While I doubt I'll remember the particulars of the story a month or two from now, I will remember the characters。 They are worthy of 4 stars。 I hope we get to see more of them。 Particularly Avon。 Seeds were planted for her, and I can't imagine those just being dropped by the wayside。 Only future books will tell。 If I could, I'd have given this book 3。5 stars rather than 4, but 3 seemed a bit harsh。 While I doubt I'll remember the particulars of the story a month or two from now, I will remember the characters。 They are worthy of 4 stars。 I hope we get to see more of them。 Particularly Avon。 Seeds were planted for her, and I can't imagine those just being dropped by the wayside。 Only future books will tell。 。。。more

Book Rating: 8/10A very enjoyable book aimed at younger readers。 Interesting but short story。 Enjoyable characters。 I found it a little difficult to believe a 16-year-old could be a Jedi Master。 But this isn't the first time Star Wars has given a teenager lots of power。 The art in this book is also a wonderful edition to the book。 The High Republic goes from strength to strength。 It's the best thing to happen to Star Wars in a very long time。 But the question I am left with。 The question I have Book Rating: 8/10A very enjoyable book aimed at younger readers。 Interesting but short story。 Enjoyable characters。 I found it a little difficult to believe a 16-year-old could be a Jedi Master。 But this isn't the first time Star Wars has given a teenager lots of power。 The art in this book is also a wonderful edition to the book。 The High Republic goes from strength to strength。 It's the best thing to happen to Star Wars in a very long time。 But the question I am left with。 The question I have had with each book。 How are The Nihil a threat to The Jedi? Yes, to The Republic I get it。 They're loads of them。 They're not afraid to die。 They're killing machines。 They have no mercy。 The weak perish and the strong survive。 But to people who have lightsabers and have mastered The Force, I'm just not seeing the threat these books are portraying them to be。 It's actually starting to get annoying a bit that four books into this series and three comic book issues (as of writing this review) into the series and this question still hasn't been adequately answered。 。。。more

A good introduction for young readers into the new time period being explored - The High Republic。 I read this aloud to my daughter every night。 She went through periods of loving it and thinking it was really boring。 A lot of the exposition is a difficult read, but she loved all the action sequences。

It's 200 years before the Star Wars movies take place。 The Galactic Republic is in a golden age where Great Works are bringing the galaxy together。 Newly minted Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh is charged with taking 12-year-old science prodigy Avon Starros to the dedication of the Starlight Beacon when their ship is sabotaged。 The two girls, a Jedi Padawan, the son of a diplomat, and a droid are the only survivors and must struggle to survive a hostile jungle moon。 Reviewer 7 It's 200 years before the Star Wars movies take place。 The Galactic Republic is in a golden age where Great Works are bringing the galaxy together。 Newly minted Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh is charged with taking 12-year-old science prodigy Avon Starros to the dedication of the Starlight Beacon when their ship is sabotaged。 The two girls, a Jedi Padawan, the son of a diplomat, and a droid are the only survivors and must struggle to survive a hostile jungle moon。 Reviewer 7 。。。more

The first of the High Republic books written for a middle-grade audience, this one focuses on Jedi Vernestra Rwoh。 Another solid entry into the High Republic initiative, and like Light of the Jedi, it will be interesting to see these if these characters cross-over to adult our YA titles。

Third book in the High Republic, and I am enjoying this new Jedi stories。 Jedi are guardians of peace in the galaxy, and Vennestra is one of the best。 At 17, she is one of the youngest Jedi ever knighted, and she is on a babysitting mission。 Then the story becomes a survival mission, and it was a fun adventure, where the best of the Jedi are tested, she had to deal with evil pirates, save her friend from the darkside, and she does not disappoint。 I enjoyed this book。

I'll be honest: I did not have high hopes for this one, especially when I saw it was a middle grade novel。 I liked Justina Ireland's Dread series, but I thought her other two Star Wars novels were just OK—and both were also middle grade。 But I was pleasantly surprised。 This was a great story with proper stakes and action, plus a great cast of characters。 It explored the dark side quite a bit, more than I expected for a middle grade story。 As the final climax I imagined this would make a great mo I'll be honest: I did not have high hopes for this one, especially when I saw it was a middle grade novel。 I liked Justina Ireland's Dread series, but I thought her other two Star Wars novels were just OK—and both were also middle grade。 But I was pleasantly surprised。 This was a great story with proper stakes and action, plus a great cast of characters。 It explored the dark side quite a bit, more than I expected for a middle grade story。 As the final climax I imagined this would make a great movie。 I'd love to see Vern and Imri in real life, plus Avon and J-6 are a fun combo。 。。。more
